Develop a Habit of Thanksgiving

Psalm 138

1 I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

3 In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.

4 All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD, when they hear the words of thy mouth.

5 Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the LORD: for great is the glory of the LORD.

6 Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

8 The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth forever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.
This psalm shows us the gratitude and thanksgiving that was in David’s heart, and should be in every Believer’s heart especially toward God, our Creator. However, there are still people who do not give thanks to God and to people who they do see. Why is this the case?

We have forgotten to give thanks in all things and in every situation? Giving of Thanks, it’s not in our feeling, but we are commanded as Saints of God to do so. Let’s read Romans 1:20-25:

20 For the invisible things of him [Elohim, God] from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Do you see why you should be making praise and worship a priority in your life? Look at verse 21, they knew God and did not glorified Him as God, neither did they give thanks to Him.

This sounds like the world, but it also sounds like most of our Christian brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. They knew God and His ways, but refuse to do His will; which states, “Let everything that has breathe praise the Lord” (Psalm 34:1).

Verse 22-25, professing themselves to be wise, I know Hebrew and Greek, I speak in tongues and have interpretations, and prophecy. I know God as Father, but became fools. Why? Because they would not give thanks to God, and have changed the glory of God into unclean images of lust from their hearts. They worshipped the unclean image of the opinions more than the Creator, God.

If you are doing anything other than what God called you to do for the kingdom and spending more time with your ministry than God. Guess what? You have changed the glory of God into an unclean image of lust from your heart. You are worshipping your ministry more than the Elohim.

If you read on to verse 32, you will see a list of unrighteousness “who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” I hope you do not take pleasure in such things.

You can get it right today, it’s your decision. My job is just to point it out to you, and provoke you to righteous living unto Holiness.

Telling someone that you appreciate them is great to do, but we stop short in developing a daily habit of thanksgiving. We can teach our children to say, “Thank You” when they receive something as good manners every day. It’s no different with God, our Father. Do you remember Daniel? He did great in the sight of God, and kept the glory of God as commanded over His life. Let’s read it in Daniel 6:10: “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.”

Daniel developed a daily habit of thanksgiving, at least three times of day. What about you? In Psalm 119:164 states according to Shin, “Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.” So, how many times a day do you praise the Righteous Judge? Hopefully, at least seven times a day! They are a model of the Old Testament and are there for our learning, but the New Testament states these:

“For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:” -1 Timothy 4:4

“For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.” – 2 Corinthians 4:15

“Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” -Colossians 2:7

“Being enriched in everything to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;” -2 Corinthians 9:11-12

“Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” -Philippians 4:6

“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;” – Colossians 4:2

“Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God forever and ever. Amen.” – Revelation 7:12

Now there are still some who might say, “How would I know is this God’s will to do?” I’m glad you asked this question. Let read 1 Thessalonians 5:18:

“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Did you get that? Thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live – this is He will!

“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;” –Ephesians 5:20

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;” – 1 Timothy 2:1

As you can see in the scriptures, you need to develop a habit of thanksgiving toward your fellow man, and especially God your Creator. Glorify His Name, as long as you have breath in your physical body!

Take some time right now…Get up from the computer, lift holy hands to the Lord, and start giving thanks to Him. He is your Lord, your God! Praise and thanksgiving is due now, later on, tomorrow, and each day

Until next time, continue to be blessed and Praise the Lord!
