Spirit bearing witness to spirit: for they that are in the flesh cannot please God (see Romans 8:8 below).
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. – John 4:23-24
Since you were made in His image and likeness (see Genesis 1:27), you are a physical being with a spiritual being dwelling on the inside: for which is made to communicate with the Heavenly Father and all other spiritual beings (see Romans 8:11 below).
The real you (for a lack of a better term) exist (in your spirit) to give glory, honor, and praise to Father God, which is our daily sacrifice and reasonable service. Romans 12:1 tells us, “…by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Your body does the work, but your spirit helps us to control ourselves for righteousness through Christ Jesus. This was the whole story given to the Samaritan women at the well, “But the hour cometh, and now is.” Do you understand? It true acceptable worship was coming for her, but for us it is happening right now for us today. Jesus tells us that worship is to be wholly spiritual, because now we have His sacrifice in which to trust. In Him, you and I were bought with the blood sacrifice in order to commune with the Heavenly Father without fear (see Romans 8:15 below). 1 Corinthians 6:20 states, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Since we belong to Christ Jesus, the Lord’s blood gave us access to the holy place; where the God’s presence dwells. Romans 5:2 states, “By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” You and I have confidence in our spiritual relationship that our spirits are communing with Him. “In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him (Ephesians 3:12).” Just like the Old Testament temple worship was external and you needed to do things acceptably in order to enter the holy of holies, now you must do the same except for being a living temple of God. Your physical body dwells your spirit, and God comes to worship with you internally, according to John 4:23 and Roman 8:16.
Romans 8
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
After reading Romans, it should be much easier to understand our key scriptures, John 4:23-24, and to accept the above answer. God is spirit and so are we; who must worship in spirit in order to have a spirit to spirit connection. Why? Because those who are in the flesh cannot please God with honor and respect. How could they? We are told in so many words that our reverence is not in our minds (see Romans 8:7 above). It is in our spirit alone.
Worship God with your understanding, until you can free your mind to worship in the spirit.
