Did you know there was a perfume receipt in the Bible? God told Moses to create a lovely fragrance for use in worship. The Old Testament illustrate the teachings tools and symbolic value to be carried out in the Tabernacle, as describe for us in Exodus 30:34-38:
34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight:
35 And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:
36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.
37 And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the Lord.
38 Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereto, shall even be cut off from his people.
Did you guess the point of this wonderful idea of worship? God gave instructions to make perfume that is pure and holy; set apart for His nostrils only. This fragrance would cost people their lives if they made it for themselves. Right there, you get the picture of true acceptable and unacceptable worship.
Verse 36 describe what is expected in the Tabernacle, “And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.” When this was done God will have respect for this true acceptable worship. If you did something other that what was asked, like what is said Verse 38, you would die. Why? Because is holy only for the Lord. You cannot do your own worship; which would be unacceptable worship in the Tabernacle of the congregation.
Now this perfume, which was actually a sweet-smelling incense, shows us that worship is unique, set-apart as an holy act that will rise up, just like our praises from our hearts to meet with the Lord. Daily He’s looking to smell this fragrance from us. We are the Temple of the Living God (The Tabernacle). When we light the incense of our praises by the fruit of our mouths. The incense will raise to God’s nostrils. Remember it is unique, separated, sanctified, pure and holy only for Him.
You were created with the respect to worship God in your own unique fashion just to please Him. So why not start burning some incense to get God’s attention. This is what everyone is looking for – to give and receive love!

The tabernacle in the wilderness, which became the center of all worship of the children of Israel during their journeyings, was designed by God Himself in heaven. It was a perfect replica of something that already existed before; it is a picture, a type, and a shadow of the Lord Jesus Christ, where God meets man, and where deity and humanity meet in one person. Every detail of the tabernacle points to some aspect of the person and work of our Savior. Then the tabernacle becomes, secondarily, a picture of the believer. Thirdly, it provides a complete picture of the plan of salvation. It is an inexhaustible subject. Within the pages of this book, the three pictures of Christ, the believers, and the plan of salvation are drawn with stimulating and expressive words to emphasize the message of “Christ in us, the hope of glory.”
