Purpose of Worship

Before I can tell you about the purpose of worship, you need to know that there are only two forms of worship that can be offered—acceptable or unacceptable worship.

The majority of the world offers unacceptable worship, and God will not accept it. The Bible tells us that God is a jealous God, and will not tolerate the worship of another—false gods, wrong form or attitude of worship. Let’s read two scriptures:

“For you shall worship no other god; for the Lord, Whose name is Jealous, is jealous (impassioned) God,” -Exodus 34:14

“And I will not give My glory to another [by permitting the worshipers of idols to triumph over you]. -Isaiah 48:11b

What about all the people who worship their own gods, because they believe they are right in their form of worship? Yes, they are sincere in their worship, but He won’t accept it. So, the answer is No!! It is unacceptable to God for anyone to worship something or someone, and not Him. This is why it is important for you to learn about acceptable worship and its purpose for your life. Stop being fooled by the devil! You are to worship the Master of the Universe only.

The word worship comes from an Old Anglo-Saxon (Old English) word called “weorthscipe”, which eventually became worthship. English Lords in those days were called “Your Worthship” in recognition of their position of authority and their extensive lands, holdings, or worth. As time went by, worthship, was further shortened to worship. Merriam—Webster Dictionary acknowledges this in their definition too by giving us the abbreviation for Old English as OE; meaning weothscipe– worthiness, respect form: worth, worthy, worth + – scipe, – ship, suffix devoting quality or condition.

You praise God, because you are acquainted with Him, and you worship God, because you have found affection for Him.

The creator God pre-wired us to praise and worship for this is our purpose in life. That is why we have a ‘want to’ in our eternal spirit to praise and worship things or someone. Harold Best in his book called “Unceasing Worship”, describes worship as not just a Christian thing, but the entire human race does it. They are going about their worship by whatever is mastering them, and is a witness to why they do what they do. Worship and praise is looked at what is of most worth to us, and can be seen any and everywhere. From our favorite food to a sports arena, we worship 24 hours a day. In doing so, we are shaped by what we praise and worship, either for good or evil. For example, if we worship self, we become self-centered. It is all about self worship. Proud and vain glory is the product of self-worship, and in of itself very evil. But if we praise and worship Christ, we become Christ-like, and love other people, and want to “Love our neighbor as ourselves” (Leviticus 19:18b).

A gospel recording artist name CeCe Winans has a song called “Just like You, Jesus”.

Tehillah the Lord Your God!

He is Worthy!
This song is a reminder of how we can be transformed into the same image of God. Be changed, if we want too! We can walk, talk, live, love, pray, and look more like Jesus.

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” -2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)

This scripture lets us know as we experience Christ’s nearness, love, righteousness, and power through prayer, praise, worship, and the help from the Holy Spirit, it results in our being (our spirits) transformed into Christ’s likeness. If you read the first Chapter of Genesis, you will find that we are made in God’s Image, and we can become “Just like you, Jesus”!

Praise and Worship, the Maker of Heaven and Earth!
Hallelujah!
